Album Review: Emmure - "Hindsight"

Controversial. Brash. Unapologetic. In your face. Aggressive. Heavy. Emotional. Loud. These are all words that you’ve probably heard people use when trying to describe Emmure. While all of them ring true in various ways, the best way to describe them is: Passionate. For nearly 17 years Emmure’s only remaining original member, and founder of the band, Frankie Palmari has been pouring 100% of himself into his passion. While at times it has been a self sabotage, other times it has been the perfect mix of chaos and control. The new album “Hindsight” is exactly that; chaos and control.

The album clocks in at around 31 minutes, and it spends the majority of that time in your face, getting your adrenaline pumping and ready to mosh, throw down, or punch holes in walls. Within about the first 7 minutes most listeners will be able to decide if this is an album they want to give a chance to or if it is outside of their hopes for the album. In that 7 minutes you will nearly get through the first 3 tracks. Starting off with “(F)inally (U)nderstanding (N)othing” you will get a barrage of vocals from Frankie as well as a heavy mix of the sound that is apparent throughout the album.

Through the middle of the album you get pounded by brutal screams, heavy guitar riffs, nu-metal influences, and much more. There are a number of tracks in the meat of this album that are clear cut examples of their past influences and the melding of their own take on that sound. Songs like “I’ve Scene God”, “Persona Non Grata”, and “Pan’s Dream” are absolutely kicks to your chest. Hard riffs, and savage vocals drive these tracks in to your ears with no regrets.

To bookend the album the last approximately 7 minutes of this album features “Action 52”, “Bastard Ritual”, and “Uncontrollable Decent”. These songs absolutely pop the listener in the mouth, not letting them forget the brutality they have endured throughout this album. Wrapping up with “Uncontrollable Decent” which brings together elements from across the album in to one final gut punch, and ending with a simple synthesized voice saying “Hindsight”.

If you are looking for tracks to add to your gym playlist, specifically a HIIT playlist this album definitely has some options for you. Many of the tracks come in at just over 2 minutes long which is great for short bursts of adrenaline and energy to push you through a workout. Nothing about this album is going to change the genre, or change the industry, but that was never the intent. The intent is to put out an album that could kick your ass with no pulled punches and on that, it delivers. Hindsight is being released digitally on June 26th, 2020, and physical copies will be released July 24th, 2020.
