New Found Glory: Make The Most Of It
New Found Glory is a band that needs no introduction for fans of pop punk music. They have released ten studio albums, one live album, two EPs, and four cover albums and cemented their place as one of the genre's most beloved and enduring acts.
In December 2021, fresh off the celebratory Pop Punk’s Still Not Dead Tour in support of their 10th album, Forever + Ever x Infinity, Gilbert was found unresponsive in bed at home, rushed to a local hospital, and diagnosed with an 8 inch cancerous tumor, a rare pheochromocytoma. Hospital stays, surgery, and a long road to recovery followed – but, in typical New Found Glory fashion, so did the songs.
The album kicks off with Dream Born Again. This track sets the tone for the album, that tone is a somber reminder that nothing is promised and we should cherish the time we have. Who doesn’t love a sappy love song? “You are the dream I thought was lost, but the dream I thought was lost came true with us” is a line of lyrics that is going to be used in pop punk proposals for years to come. Sonically the track is not the high energy pop punk feeling that many people associate with NFG, however it is undeniably a NFG song.
Mouth to Mouth is next up, and is slightly more uptempo. Featuring robust acoustic guitars and vocal harmonies. This track is another story being told of finding someone that is with you through everything and while it is easy to relax and get comfortable with that, remembering that you have to make the most of it and not take that time together for granted.
Next is a song that really hits me in the heart is Get Me Home. I had a very scary near death experience in 2021 as well and hearing this song now reminds me of those days laying in the hospital bed with my thoughts. In this track the lyrics hopefully plead for the best possible outcome, the best surgeons, successful removal of the tumor, recovery, and getting to go back home with his family. One of the things that is incredible about NFG is their ability to take such a tragic event, moment, and situation and write a song that both punches you in the feelings, but also is upbeat enough to sing along to and have a smile on your face.
Watch The Lillies Grow comes up next and is a beautifully sad track. While much of the album shares the somber, melancholy vibe of the battle with cancer, this track is something else, something more. The song is a message to Chad’s daughter, that even if he lost this battle he would still watch over her, still guide her, and be present.
Picking the tempo back up is More Than Enough. This track feels a bit more like a classic NFG track, slightly self deprecating but also hopelessly romantic. The track is going to be a sleeper on the album that people get more and more into as they listen to it more times.
Kiss The Floor simply put is about appreciation. After a near death experience the appreciation of still being alive and surviving, but also appreciating that every struggle, battle, and trauma you’ve been through made you the person you are. “For all my hardest memories I thank you, because it brought out the best in me” the lyrics say, and while its not always easy to see or acknowledge there is truth to coming through the struggles of life a better person.
Closing out the new tracks for this album is Bloom. Talks about that easy and familiar feeling of being buried, and not being able to see how much growth is left for you. Its something that everyone struggles with from time to time but this song is a reminder to stop and look around and see that things can and will get better.
The album then gives us lifelong fans live acoustic versions of some of our favorite songs. Those songs include Understatement, All Downhill From Here, Dressed To Kill, The Story So Far, Failures Not Flattering, My Friends Over You, and Hit Or Miss.
At the heart of New Found Glory's success is their catchy and energetic sound, which has remained consistently upbeat and infectious throughout the band's career. From their breakthrough album "Sticks and Stones" to their more recent releases, the band has always had a knack for writing catchy hooks and upbeat melodies that get stuck in your head and keep you coming back for more.
I have been a fan of New Found Glory since first hearing Nothing Gold Can Stay back while I was in high school. NFG have been a soundtrack to my life as we both have grown and matured over the years. This album hits especially close to home for me as I also had a sudden near death experience in January 2021. This album is going to be powerful and meaningful for a large number of people, but there are going to be some people that see themselves in these lyrics more than anyone else. On behalf of the entire fanbase I say “Thank you” but also “I’m glad everything worked out”.
