Jagwar Twin: 33
JAGWAR TWIN provokes and inspires, adapting to rapidly evolving changes in culture with the speed and agility of the enduring “big cat” of the Americas, the jaguar. Otherworldly garage-rock guitars, grimy break beats, and vivid poetry combine with electro-pop flourish and soulful R&B into a unique style that’s broadly “alternative” and definitively Jagwar Twin. Jagwar Twin is doubling down with their sophomore album 33, out September 30 via Big Loud Rock.
Kicking off the album with Online, the listener is immediately greeted with a catchy beat and hooky chant. If you are unfamiliar with Jagwar Twin this track is going to give you a taste of the chaos that you are about to experience. It is easy to get sucked into the song very quickly and hits you with a change up that you likely won’t see coming.
It’s Your Time is a completely different vibe than the prior track, which as you will come to find is a trend on this album, but still sucks the listener into a positive affirmation anthem. Squealing guitars, and a catchy hook are going to have fans holding this track close, and in a live setting will have the whole floor moving.
Coming in next is Pay Attention ft. little luna. This track is one that I think is going to be a sleeper on the album. Initially it may be overlooked but is going to be a track that fans come back to and and blow up. The track has a dancey vibe, lyrics that are bouncing along the track and the harmonics from the guest vocals will surely perk up the listeners ears.
I Like To Party changes directions for the album yet again. The track features a familiar styling to fans of Twenty One Pilots, but also i very distinctly unique. The track features a bit of a dark and moody soundscape and includes a video that follows a very creepy feel.
In yet another change of sounds for the album, Soul Is A Star. Lyrically the song is much more of a story telling adventure, with a blues and jazz feel. Vocally delivered with a blues and soul method, mashed up with a soundscape that feels like a vintage 70’s movie scene.
Happy Face comes in for listeners to bob their heads to a solid steady beat. “Hey, put on a happy face. Then everything’s ok” the lyrics chant the societal bandaid for mental health.
Shaking up the vibe again, Down To You comes in with an upbeat track, and vocals. This track feels like it could be played on a Top 40 type of radio station, but also feels like it is just far enough outside of the current norm that it would be get passed over while fans flood the request lines for it.
As the next track comes in listeners are going to check to see if somehow they accidentally changed artists entirely. Another Way II Heaven brings in an absolutely gorgeous R&B track that will blindside the listener but will also be a track that people are sharing with their significant others. If you were a fan of old school 90’s and early 2000’s R&B this song is going to get you feeling nostalgic and reminiscing about artists like Boyz II Men, Brian McKnight, and more.
Coming in with an indie rock powerhouse is Imagine A World. This track is yet another genre where Jagwar Twin flexes his prowess and makes you question if there is anything he can’t do musically.
The Circle closes out the album in the most bizarrely beautiful way. This track is absolutely unlike anything else on the album. The track is such a cinematic vibe feeling like it should be in The Jungle Book live action remake. It has this really weird way of not fitting into the album at all, but also perfectly fitting in to close out the album and feeling like a resolution.
While listening to this album I came into it completely blind, having not heard anything from Jagwar Twin before. The first time listening through the album I was so intrigued, but lost in what was going on, and why these tracks don’t seem to fit together, yet the flow of the album also made perfect sense. It was a paradox. It is chaotic, but composed. It’s weird, but familiar. It’s a mess, but it’s clean.
Jagwar Twin defies all boundaries set by any musical genre, he fits in none of the boxes, but he fits in all of them at the same time. I would love to be able to tell you who this album will be a good fit for, but the truth is that anyone that is openminded, and just wants to enjoy music in any form is going to have tracks on this album they will like. I believe that he may very well be a musical savant.
