Introduction
We all know that music plays a huge role in our lives and can impact our mental health, both positively and negatively. The goal of this podcast is to allow musicians to openly discuss mental health without the veil of lyrics.
The music community is a beautiful place and for some people it is the only safe space that they have. It is the only place where they feel normal. It can be the only time that they do not feel alone.
Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death in people ages 10-34. Let that sink in… at 10 years old we are losing today’s youth to suicide. 46% of people that die by suicide have a diagnosed mental health condition, and 90% of people who die by suicide have experienced symptoms of a mental health condition. The LBGTQ youth community are 4x more likely to attempt suicide than straight youth. Transgender people are 12 times more likely to attempt suicide than the general population. Lastly 78% of all people who die by suicide are male. (per NAMI reports)
Through the Musicians For Mental Health podcast we hope to raise awareness around the topic and help fans to understand that they are not alone in their battles, that it is ok to talk about, and that it is ok to seek help. While we are not licensed counselors or therapists we will give our perspective on mental health through the life experiences we have had, and will allow the artists to do the same.
The podcast will feature 2 episodes per month, on the first and third Monday of each month.
